What is Windows AI Foundry?

Windows AI Foundry acts as an integrated, reliable, and secure platform that supports every step of the AI developer experience, from model selection and fine-tuning to optimization and deployment across various processors such as CPU, GPU, NPU, and cloud configurations. It equips developers with tools like Windows ML, allowing for the seamless integration and deployment of custom models across a broad array of silicon partners, including AMD, Intel, NVIDIA, and Qualcomm, which address the needs of CPU, GPU, and NPU. Furthermore, Foundry Local allows developers to utilize their chosen open-source models, thereby enhancing the sophistication of their applications. The platform also includes a variety of ready-to-use AI APIs that utilize on-device models, specifically fine-tuned for optimal efficiency and performance on Copilot+ PC devices, requiring minimal setup. These APIs support an extensive range of capabilities, such as text recognition (OCR), image super-resolution, image segmentation, image description, and object removal. In addition, developers have the ability to customize the built-in Windows models using their own datasets through LoRA for Phi Silica, which enhances the flexibility and responsiveness of their applications. This extensive array of resources not only simplifies the development process but also fosters an environment where innovation in advanced AI-driven solutions can thrive, ultimately empowering developers to push the boundaries of what is possible in artificial intelligence.

What is Tinker?

Tinker is a groundbreaking training API designed specifically for researchers and developers, granting them extensive control over model fine-tuning while alleviating the intricacies associated with infrastructure management. It provides fundamental building blocks that enable users to construct custom training loops, implement various supervision methods, and develop reinforcement learning workflows. At present, Tinker supports LoRA fine-tuning on open-weight models from the LLama and Qwen families, catering to a spectrum of model sizes that range from compact versions to large mixture-of-experts setups. Users have the flexibility to craft Python scripts for data handling, loss function management, and algorithmic execution, while Tinker efficiently manages scheduling, resource allocation, distributed training, and failure recovery independently. The platform empowers users to download model weights at different checkpoints, freeing them from the responsibility of overseeing the computational environment. Offered as a managed service, Tinker runs training jobs on Thinking Machines’ proprietary GPU infrastructure, relieving users of the burdens associated with cluster orchestration and allowing them to concentrate on refining and enhancing their models. This harmonious combination of features positions Tinker as an indispensable resource for propelling advancements in machine learning research and development, ultimately fostering greater innovation within the field.
