What is dompdf?

Dompdf operates as a powerful tool that converts HTML documents into PDF files. At its foundation, it acts as a PHP-based layout and rendering engine that primarily adheres to the CSS 2.1 specification. This renderer, driven by styling, can download and process external stylesheets while also managing inline style tags and specific HTML element attributes. Furthermore, it recognizes a wide array of presentational HTML attributes, enhancing its usability. For PDF generation, dompdf relies on either PDFLib or a tailored version of the R&OS CPDF class, initially developed by Wayne Munro, with various improvements incorporated to bolster performance. To effectively use PDFLib with dompdf, the installation of the PDFLib PECL extension is necessary. While PDFLib integration can optimize performance and reduce memory usage, the R&OS CPDF class, although slightly slower, eliminates the requirement for any external PDF libraries. Dompdf is proficient in supporting both local and remote stylesheets that can be accessed through HTTP or FTP protocols. Additionally, it can manage complex table structures, allowing for features like row and column spans, multiple border models, and individual cell styling options. This extensive functionality positions dompdf as a highly adaptable and effective solution for generating PDFs from HTML content, making it an excellent option for developers looking to create well-styled documents.
