What is DroidAR?

DroidAR is a flexible framework crafted for creating Augmented Reality applications specifically on Android devices. It accommodates both marker-based and location-based AR experiences, making it suitable for a diverse range of applications. Users have the opportunity to try out a variety of demo applications that highlight its features (see the videos below). For the latest updates regarding DroidAR, please check our blog. The framework can be downloaded for free under the GNU GPL v3 license from our GitHub repository, with a commercial licensing option also available for those interested. Since its initial launch as an augmented reality development tool in 2010, DroidAR has seen ongoing improvements and the introduction of new features. This software development kit (SDK) empowers developers to effortlessly incorporate augmented reality capabilities into their own applications. We provide the SDK at no charge for non-commercial endeavors under an Open Source License. Over the years, it has established itself as one of the most widely used open-source augmented reality SDKs designed for the Android ecosystem, demonstrating its extensive popularity within the developer community. Additionally, the ongoing support and community contributions further enhance its robustness and feature set, ensuring that it remains relevant in the evolving landscape of augmented reality technology.

What is artoolkitX?

ARToolKit emerged as an open-source project in 2001, and it remained under the management of ARToolworks while retaining its open-source character until its acquisition in 2015. In late 2017, noticing a decline in activity on the ARToolKit forum, Ben Vaughan and Phil Lamb, who previously held the positions of CEO and CTO at ARToolworks, decided to launch artoolkitX to ensure the continuation of development and support for the beloved ARToolKit community. This new initiative is supported by Realmax Inc, a leading Chinese augmented reality company that is at the forefront of innovative hardware and software solutions in the field. The establishment of artoolkitX signifies a committed effort to rejuvenate the ARToolKit ecosystem and encourage collaboration among its users, aiming to create a vibrant environment that fosters creativity and innovation within the community. Ultimately, this project hopes to breathe new life into the tools that have long been instrumental for developers and enthusiasts alike.
