Originally known as GnomeMeeting, Ekiga is a free and open-source software that facilitates SoftPhone, video conferencing, and instant messaging over the Internet. Its capabilities deliver high-definition sound and video quality that rivals DVDs. At that time, the GNU/Linux desktop environment was still maturing, and the multimedia functionalities available were quite limited. Many webcam drivers were plagued by significant problems, ALSA had not yet been implemented, and achieving full-duplex audio was a notable challenge. Performance issues were prevalent, particularly due to the widespread use of proprietary codecs. Nevertheless, Ekiga emerged as a groundbreaking solution!
