What is Newsela?

Incorporating context and relevance into any English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum is essential for delivering effective literacy instruction. To promote authentic engagement, it is vital to present topics that connect with students, which simultaneously boosts their background knowledge and vocabulary, helping to create active and invested readers. The belief that student engagement and standards-compliant ELA instruction cannot coexist is a fallacy; they can actually enhance each other harmoniously. By crafting engaging ELA lessons that consistently feature authentic, leveled content in line with educational standards, teachers have the opportunity to ignite students' curiosity. With access to a diverse collection of over 10,000 texts across more than 20 genres, students are encouraged to explore a vast range of subjects, ensuring they encounter the complex texts that await them in academic environments and in life. Each piece of reading material comes with a quiz designed to meet ELA standards, emphasizing either informational text or literature, which allows educators to tailor instruction to address the specific skill development needs of each learner while nurturing a passion for reading. This method not only enhances the overall educational experience but also equips students for the various reading challenges they will encounter throughout their lives, fostering a lifelong appreciation for literature and learning. Ultimately, by weaving together relevance and academic rigor, teachers can create an enriching ELA environment that benefits every student.

What is Lexia PowerUp Literacy?

Lexia® PowerUp Literacy® targets literacy improvement for students in grades 6–12 who are particularly at risk of not meeting College- and Career-Ready Standards. Its effectiveness has been proven to be up to five times greater than standard middle school reading interventions, enabling students to make several years' worth of progress within a single academic year. In grades 6–12, students are anticipated to move from merely learning to read to utilizing their reading skills for knowledge acquisition. However, assessments like the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) highlight a significant opportunity gap, showing that only about one-third of eighth graders attain proficient reading levels. Since reading is essential for most secondary education courses, many students may struggle to achieve their full academic potential. PowerUp provides a solution by leveraging over thirty years of expertise in effective Structured Literacy programs, with Lexia’s literacy specialists customizing it to significantly improve learning outcomes. By concentrating on personalized learning pathways, PowerUp guarantees that each student has the opportunity to conquer literacy obstacles and excel in their educational pursuits, ultimately fostering a more equitable learning environment. This commitment to individualized support helps ensure that no student is left behind in their quest for literacy success.
