What is OpenAI Frontier?

OpenAI Frontier represents a groundbreaking platform tailored for businesses, enabling the creation, deployment, management, and orchestration of various AI agents that can perform useful functions within existing systems, workflows, and data settings. This consolidated framework allows organizations to effortlessly incorporate AI agents—whether they are created by OpenAI or other developers—into their existing tools like CRM platforms, data repositories, and support ticket systems, ensuring that these agents function with a common context, shared permissions, memory, and oversight to perform essential business tasks efficiently. Frontier seeks to move AI agents beyond isolated experimental stages into fully functional production settings by providing features such as collective business context, governance mechanisms, efficient onboarding procedures, observability, and secure access parameters. This transition aims to empower organizations to centralize and scale their intelligent automation capabilities similarly to how human resource systems organize workforce operations, ultimately boosting efficiency and productivity throughout the company. Furthermore, by adopting this holistic strategy, businesses can guarantee that their AI agents are not only proficient but also in harmony with their overarching strategic goals, fostering a more integrated approach to automation within their operations. In this way, Frontier not only enhances operational capabilities but also helps organizations stay competitive in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

What is Microsoft Autopilot?

Microsoft Autopilot is a long-running AI agent in Microsoft Copilot built to handle persistent, recurring, and proactive work across an organization. The product was previously called Scout and is positioned by Microsoft as a digital teammate that can continue operating without waiting for a prompt at every stage. Users can assign Autopilot a name, role, goal, and operating boundaries, after which it can monitor activity, follow up on threads, run recurring work, and resume projects over extended periods. One example provided by Microsoft is a supplier review process in which Autopilot can create the schedule and workback plan, prepare for meetings, manage follow-ups, and contact stakeholders for updates. Autopilot is cloud-hosted, so its work can continue while users are offline or focused elsewhere. Each Autopilot instance lives within the organization’s tenant and has its own identity, memory, computer, and workspace. It is built on Microsoft IQ, which connects enterprise knowledge, data, and workflows to provide context for the agent’s actions. Autopilot can surface across Microsoft 365 experiences including Teams, Outlook, chats, channels, and documents, where users can interact with it similarly to a colleague. The service is governed through organizational permissions, audit controls, and policy boundaries so companies can define what the agent is allowed to access and execute. Microsoft positions Autopilot alongside Cowork and Code as one of Copilot’s long-running agentic capabilities, with usage-based billing applied to this type of work. As announced on September 25, 2026, Autopilot was expanding to private preview at the end of September.
