What is Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Block Volume?

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Block Volume provides customers with reliable and high-performance block storage that works seamlessly with various virtual machines and bare metal configurations. These Block Volumes are built with inherent redundancy, which guarantees their persistence and durability even when a virtual machine is no longer operational, with the capability to scale up to 1 PB for every compute instance. Each volume is engineered for long-lasting use, operating on redundant hardware to ensure outstanding reliability. Users have the option to back up both their block and boot volumes to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Object Storage, enabling them to establish regular recovery points. Additionally, they can manage their storage capacity flexibly, free from the constraints of traditional provisioning. Existing block and boot volumes can be expanded from 50 GB to as much as 32 TB while remaining online, thus avoiding any interruptions to applications and workloads. Furthermore, users can easily clone volumes or restore from backups, which simplifies the process of upgrading to larger volumes. This cloning can be performed without the prerequisite of a backup and restore, enhancing the efficiency of storage management. Overall, the features of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Block Volume significantly improve operational flexibility and reliability for users managing their storage needs.

What is DRBD?

DRBD® (Distributed Replicated Block Device) is an open-source solution focused on block storage replication for Linux, designed to deliver high-performance and high-availability (HA) data services by either synchronously or asynchronously mirroring local block devices between nodes in real-time. As a virtual block-device driver that is intricately woven into the Linux kernel, DRBD ensures optimal local read performance while enabling efficient write-through replication to partner devices. The accompanying user-space tools, such as drbdadm, drbdsetup, and drbdmeta, enhance the management experience through declarative configuration, metadata handling, and comprehensive administration across various installations. Originally created for two-node HA clusters, the latest iteration, DRBD 9.x, has adapted to support multi-node replication and integrate smoothly into software-defined storage (SDS) systems like LINSTOR, broadening its utility in cloud-native environments. This progression underscores the increasing necessity for resilient data management solutions in today's complex technological landscape, highlighting the importance of adaptability in meeting evolving demands.
