What is Urban Network Analysis Toolbox for ArcGIS?

The City Form Lab has introduced a groundbreaking toolbox tailored for the examination of urban networks. This pioneering ArcGIS toolbox stands out as the first of its kind, incorporating centrality tools that enable the calculation of five unique graph analysis metrics on spatial networks: reach, gravity, betweenness, closeness, and straightness. Furthermore, it contains redundancy tools that compute the redundancy index, pinpoint redundant pathways, and evaluate the wayfinding index. Remarkably, these tools feature three significant capabilities that enhance their utility in spatial analysis of urban street networks. To begin with, they can take into account both geometry and topology in the input networks, allowing the incorporation of metric distance (like meters) and topological distance (such as turns) as impedance factors during analysis. Additionally, unlike previous software that only addressed two network components—nodes and edges—the UNA tools introduce a third component: buildings, which act as the spatial units for all analytical evaluations. This holistic methodology not only bolsters the precision of urban analysis but also yields richer insights into the interactions within urban settings. As urban environments continue to evolve, such tools will be essential for planners and researchers aiming to understand complex urban dynamics.

What is CityCAD?

Unlike many other CAD and GIS tools, this software was purposefully crafted for urban planners right from the start, enabling the development of 3D representations that incorporate recognized architectural styles and urban layouts. CityCAD offers a user-friendly and effective approach to constructing urban masterplans in a three-dimensional environment. It automatically generates junctions with simple kerb radii whenever routes cross each other. Furthermore, if the roads are repositioned, the adjacent urban blocks are resized automatically to match. The software also comes equipped with a variety of sophisticated analytical tools that provide essential quantitative feedback on your masterplan during the early stages of conceptual design. Users have the ability to create a custom library of land use types and apply these to various building levels. In addition, you can input projections for energy consumption, water usage, and waste generation rates (calculated on a per person, dwelling unit, or area basis), with total estimates being updated in real-time as you enhance your design. This feature not only fosters a more adaptable and informed planning process but also empowers users to implement changes based on immediate data and insights. Ultimately, this software revolutionizes the way urban planners conceptualize and execute their projects, making it an invaluable tool in the field of urban development.
