What is VABS?

VABS serves as a popular instrument for conducting cross-sectional analyses, enabling quick and uncomplicated calculations of beam properties and the retrieval of three-dimensional fields in composite beams, commonly utilized in components like helicopter and wind turbine blades. It is unique in its capacity to disentangle a complex 3D slender solid with intricate microstructures into a basic engineering beam model. Developed by AnalySwift, which has its roots in aerospace, tools specifically designed for composite beams, including those used in helicopter rotor blades, propellers, high aspect ratio wings, and various wing section designs, as well as plates, shells, and three-dimensional frameworks, have emerged. VABS has been applied in the wind turbine sector for several years, consistently delivering rapid and accurate modeling results for wind turbine blades. Additionally, SwiftComp broadens its functionality, providing solutions for plates, shells, and 3D composite configurations. As the automotive industry increasingly adopts composite materials in vehicle construction, there is a significant opportunity to apply both SwiftComp and VABS for modeling a wide spectrum of structural forms, including beams, plates, and shells, further enhancing their usability. The adaptability and efficiency of these tools render them essential across various engineering fields, thus fostering innovative designs in multiple industries.

What is StructSuite?

StructSuite is a free, online software solution tailored for structural analysis and load calculations, specifically targeting residential and light-frame construction projects. This powerful tool enables the design of wood and steel beams as well as columns, adhering to the standards set by NDS 2024 and AISC 360-22; it also supports the design of floor and ceiling joists and rafters, referencing the 2024 IBC span tables. In addition to these features, it facilitates the design of wood-frame shear walls, which can be illustrated on building plans in accordance with SDPWS 2021, complete with Simpson hold-downs and anchors; furthermore, it provides designs for both isolated and strip footings that follow ACI 318-25 guidelines, as well as cantilever retaining walls made from concrete or CMU stems in line with TMS 402-22 standards. The software is capable of calculating a variety of loads, such as dead, live, seismic, and wind loads, in conformity with ASCE 7-22. Throughout the design process, users are able to view equations populated with project-specific values, and a book icon offers easy reference to the relevant sections of the governing codes for heightened clarity. Results can be gathered into a detailed calculation report that serves the purpose of plan reviews. The free version provides access to all modules, allows for unlimited calculations, and includes one cloud project, while the Pro subscription unlocks unlimited projects, the ability to create PDF reports, and an online verification link for plan checking; pricing for the subscription options is set at $100 monthly or $1,000 annually, with a one-week Pro access pass available for $50. The tool significantly improves efficiency and streamlines adherence to industry standards, establishing itself as an essential asset for structural engineers engaged in diverse projects. Moreover, its user-friendly interface empowers engineers to focus more on design and less on administrative tasks, further enhancing their productivity.
