What is Webian Shell?

Webian Shell is an operating system interface focused on web applications, tailored specifically for use within a browser environment. Its back button mimics that of standard browsers, while its window manager acts as a tab manager, enabling any web page to be set as the default homepage. The system can store applications, bookmarks, and browsing history, with the added benefit of synchronization across multiple devices through Webian Home. In its earlier iterations, Webian Shell was built on technologies such as XULRunner, Mozilla Chromeless, and Mozilla's B2G, all of which are now considered outdated. The Gecko engine has evolved from a robust application development platform to a backend solely for Firefox. Following B2G's shift to community-driven development, I envisioned utilizing B2G OS as a base, capitalizing on a newly structured architecture that differentiated between system chrome and web services, thereby allowing for creative enhancements. This strategy not only aims to enhance user experience but also opens doors to innovative functionalities that could redefine how users interact with web applications. By reimagining these frameworks, we can cultivate a more cohesive and engaging web environment for everyone.

What is Falkon?

Falkon is a web browser created by KDE that employs the QtWebEngine rendering engine and was previously referred to as QupZilla. It is designed to be a lightweight browser that works seamlessly across all major operating systems. Originally intended for educational purposes, Falkon has grown into a comprehensive web browsing solution since its launch. It boasts essential features typical of modern browsers, including bookmarks, a history sidebar, and tabbed browsing capabilities. The browser also integrates an AdBlock plugin, which is set to block ads automatically by default. The project dates back to December 2010, when the first version of QupZilla was introduced, utilizing Python and PyQt4 bindings for its development. After several iterations, QupZilla underwent a significant rewrite in C++, leveraging the Qt Framework for its functionality. The inaugural public release was version 1.0.0-b4. Until version 2.0, QupZilla relied on the now-defunct QtWebKit, but later updates moved to the more modern QtWebEngine. With the release of version 3.0, the project transitioned away from the QupZilla name and has since been actively updated as Falkon. This change signified a major evolution in the project’s focus on adhering to contemporary web standards, enhancing user experience significantly. As a result, Falkon continues to evolve, aiming to provide a robust and modern browsing experience for its users.
