What is Wireshark?

Wireshark is recognized as the premier and most extensively used network protocol analyzer globally. This powerful tool provides users with the ability to scrutinize the complex details of their network interactions and has established itself as the go-to reference for numerous sectors, such as businesses, non-profit organizations, governmental entities, and educational institutions. The ongoing evolution of Wireshark is supported by the contributions of networking experts from across the globe, stemming from a project launched by Gerald Combs back in 1998. As an interactive network protocol analyzer, Wireshark permits users to capture and investigate the data flowing through a computer network in real-time. Renowned for its comprehensive and robust features, it is the most preferred tool of its kind on an international scale. Additionally, it operates smoothly on various platforms, including Windows, macOS, Linux, and UNIX. Widely utilized by network professionals, security analysts, software developers, and educators worldwide, it remains freely available as an open-source application, distributed under the GNU General Public License version 2. Its community-oriented development approach not only keeps it aligned with the latest advancements in networking technologies but also encourages collaborative improvements from users everywhere. As a result, Wireshark continues to evolve and meet the ever-changing demands of network analysis.

What is VisualEther?

VisualEther converts Wireshark's packet captures (PCAP/PCAPNG) into clear sequence diagrams, enabling AI coding agents like Claude Code to explain the causes of network session failures in simple terms. Unlike Wireshark, which provides intricate details on individual packets, VisualEther captures the entire conversation from the data file, ensuring accuracy and reproducibility, and includes over 82 integrated protocol templates that encompass a broad spectrum such as 5G NR, 5G core, LTE, IMS/VoLTE, SIP/RTP, BGP, OSPF, DNS, HTTP/2, HTTP/3, TLS, Kerberos, Diameter, GTP, and various industrial protocols like Modbus, DNP3, and EtherNet/IP. The integrated MCP server intelligently filters out only the necessary messages and fields, allowing an AI agent to manage structured data efficiently instead of wading through a large volume of raw packet information. This functionality supports an author-debug-verify cycle, referencing specific frame numbers as evidence for clarity. Built on the capabilities of tshark, if Wireshark can analyze it, VisualEther can visually represent it. With features for observation, analysis, troubleshooting, and automation, VisualEther is accessible on Windows (via winget), macOS (through Homebrew), and Linux (using apt/dnf), providing a free Community edition along with Professional and Server editions tailored for more complex requirements. This all-encompassing tool not only simplifies network analysis but also significantly improves the troubleshooting experience for IT specialists, making it an invaluable resource in any network engineer's toolkit.
