What is Apple Dictation?

Apple Dictation is a built-in feature in macOS that enables users to input text vocally in any application that accepts text entry. After activating the feature, users can start it by using the Microphone key, a custom keyboard shortcut, or by choosing Start Dictation, and they can end it by pressing the Escape key, the same shortcut, or the Microphone key once more. For Apple silicon Mac users, it is possible to continue typing while using dictation; the feature will resume listening once the user stops typing. Users can also give voice commands to add emoji, punctuation, new lines, and paragraphs, with the system automatically inserting commas, periods, and question marks in supported languages. Dictation can accommodate text of any length and will automatically stop after 30 seconds of silence. If macOS encounters uncertainty with a word, it highlights the text for users to select an alternative or correct it manually. Furthermore, users can activate multiple Dictation languages and switch between them seamlessly while speaking, along with the option to choose their desired microphone or let macOS select one automatically. This versatility not only enhances productivity but also significantly improves accessibility across various macOS applications, making it an invaluable tool for users.
