What is DeskProto?
DeskProto is a versatile 3D CAM software designed for creating CNC milling operations across 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis machines. This program supports the importing of various file types, including 2D vector formats like DXF, SVG, AI, and EPS, as well as 3D geometric files such as STL and DXF, and even bitmap images. It also provides functionality for calculating CNC toolpaths based on your designs. Once the paths are generated, users can easily export the toolpath files to a wide range of compatible machines, as the software boasts an extensive list of supported models. DeskProto is offered in several editions: free, entry-level, expert, and multi-axis, catering to different user needs. Additionally, hobbyists have the option to obtain an affordable hobby license for the more advanced editions, making it accessible for personal projects. This flexibility makes DeskProto a popular choice among both professionals and enthusiasts in the CNC milling community.

DeskProto
Updated: Dec 12 2024SummaryWould definitely happily recommend this to anybody with a CNC; even if you are comfortable enough to write your own GCode or script an excel document to write it for you, sometimes just banging the image or model into the app and having a functional gcode ready to roll is nice.
PositiveSimple to use - the wizards really take the guesswork out of things for beginners.
Scaleable - you can be as much in control of the process as you wish for, so it grows well with you as you grow in confidenceNegativeI am unhappy that they have only just released the V-Carve solution. I have not yet upgraded to the Version 8 that incorporates this, as I have got used to making do with FEngrave. This would have been a nice to have before trying to go the hard route.

I understand that tool paths can be broken, it would be nice (but potentially impossible to predict) to know this before embarking on a visualisation that just sits doing nothing for hours. Note I am still on V7, so this may be addressed in V8
