What is Guideline?

Small business owners can easily access a straightforward and budget-friendly 401(k) plan. Our mission is to ensure that every small business has the opportunity to provide a 401(k) that helps employees build a retirement they can look forward to. We seamlessly integrate with leading payroll providers, manage plan administration, and offer affordable mutual fund choices. Unlike other 401(k) plans, we do not impose extra fees on investments. We stand out by handling administration, compliance testing, recordkeeping, and other essential tasks to simplify your responsibilities. Our service is comprehensive, taking care of everything from employee onboarding to compliance testing, government filings, and meticulous recordkeeping. We pride ourselves on predictable pricing, charging a single, all-inclusive fee that starts at $39 per month plus $8 for each participating employee, with no hidden setup or investment costs. Furthermore, our full payroll integration ensures that employee data is automatically synced, enhancing efficiency and accuracy in managing retirement contributions. This way, small businesses can focus on growth while we manage their retirement needs.

Fees have increased, customer serivce decreased, no new features.

    Date: Sep 11 2023
    Summary

Spoken with Guideline several times over the years and each time I am left with the impression that our company is more of a burden than an asset.

Last year they doubled their pricing, including adding fees for individual users. When I asked them what we received in return for paying more the answer was nothing.

Called Guideline today. After waiting on hold for over 10 minutes I accepted the prompt for a call back saying I would not lose my spot in line Several hours later I received an email indicating they received my message with a link to their help section while I wait.

So to sum it up, we are paying more, customer service has degraded, no new features or services, that benefit our company have been added (in years).

    Positive

    Integrates with Gusto payroll services.
Simplified 401k process through automated payroll deductions.

    Negative

    Limited investment options.
No reporting options to show 401k performance.
    No retirement planning features.
    Pricing doubled.
No additional features or services have been added.
Customer service is difficult to reach.

    Makes benefits simple

    Date: Aug 17 2021
    Summary

Guideline was simple to explore, partner with, execute, and maintain. I'm really glad we found out about Guideline (through Gusto) as a retirement solution and we plan to continue to use them longterm.

    Positive

Guideline makes something incredibly complex feel really simple. Things are explained in plain terms and, even for a first time benefits administrator, it was easy to execute.

    Negative

Some employees might not like that there's a required 1% retirement contribution.
