What is Haraka?

Haraka excels in handling thousands of concurrent connections and is capable of processing a remarkable number of messages every second. Its development, rooted in asynchronous JavaScript, contributes to remarkable speed and efficiency for both Haraka and its plugins. With strong spam protection offered by various plugins, Haraka effectively operates as a filtering Mail Transfer Agent (MTA). It also serves as a Mail Submission Agent (MSA) on port 587, especially when paired with authentication and DKIM signing plugins. Unlike conventional mail servers such as Exchange or Postfix, Haraka is not intended to function as a mail storage system, Local Delivery Agent (LDA), or an IMAP server like Dovecot or Courier. Instead, it is frequently integrated with these systems to provide improved functionality. Haraka's built-in outbound mail delivery engine is designed for scalability, ensuring that messages intended for relaying through authentication plugins are efficiently processed and queued for delivery. Additionally, the plugin framework of Haraka facilitates easy extensions, making it a valuable supplement to traditional MTAs that may fall short in filtering capabilities, thereby improving the email management experience. This modular structure allows users to customize their email solutions to meet specific needs, ensuring flexibility in their configurations. In this way, Haraka not only enhances performance but also adapts to the diverse requirements of modern email systems.
