Best All-around Database Development and Admin Tool

    Date: May 30 2020
    Summary

While there are less expensive database clients out there, Navicat Premium does offer outstanding value for the money. In fact, having worked with many tools over the years, I don't think that I'd trade Navicat Premium for anything.

    Positive

Being an IT consultant and author requires me to work with a variety of databases. These include popular DBMS such as MySQL, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, as well as cloud providers such as Amazon RDS, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud.
One of the most challenging tasks is migrating structure and data between two heterogeneous database types. Before I discovered Navicat Premium, I used to have to dump SQL files using a 3rd party utility and then create database objects on the target DB. Now I can connect to both simultaneously and perform all of my migration work from one tool.
The latest version - 15 - added a couple of features that I have gotten a lot of use from. The first is Dark Mode. My eyes get really tired after a few hours of bright computer screens. Dark mode is so much easier on them. I also have greatly benefited from the new data visualization tool. It's enables me to transform my organization's data into sharp-looking visualizations to better identify trends and patterns. I've presented data analysis to my team mates and superiors to support my business decisions and strategies with outstanding results!

    Negative

If there's any fault with Navicat Premium it's that it has maybe too many features. There are some things that I rarely or never use. For example, the product designers put a lot of work into the Visual SQL Builder. While it may be beneficial to beginners who are not well versed in SQL, I don't personally need it.
