Best S3 Option for Scale Up AND Scale Down
Date: Oct 14 2025SummaryONTAP S3 is well documented, easy to use, and integrates with all other data protection features built into ONTAP that make it a no-brainer to protect data locally and at 1 or more DR sites.
PositiveEasy to implement, fully supports all needed S3 APIs including multipart upload. Allows for Object File duality (access same data over S3, CIFS, or NFS)
NegativeUses ONTAP SnapMirror replication (a bonus for my use case) instead of storage lifecycle policies (which require way more sites and copies to achieve a lower level of protection) to replicate data to other sites. So in my case this is a plus but for folks wanting automated storage lifecycle policies to offsite protect data I recommend they use StorageGRID instead. In my case I was looking to take advantage of RAID_TEC and large raid groups to achieve much higher level of protection for edge sites with far fewer minimum disks (1 large M2 SSD in my edge use case)
