What is PhotoCraft?
PhotoCraft is a free, open-source image editing program designed for working with photographs, digital graphics, and layered image compositions. The application is written in Rust and provides a native editing interface with conventional image editing menus, tool panels, and keyboard shortcuts. Its GPU-accelerated rendering engine supports Metal, Vulkan, DirectX 12, and WebGPU for displaying and modifying image content. PhotoCraft allows users to organize visual elements into layers and apply masks to control which portions of an image are visible or affected by edits. The software includes painting brushes, vector editing capabilities, editable typography, and layer styles for creating graphics and modifying existing designs. Users can import and save layered Adobe Photoshop PSD and PSB documents, supporting workflows that involve existing Photoshop files. Non-destructive editing features include 16 adjustment layers, smart objects, smart filters, and more than 70 filters with live previews. Subject and object selection tools operate locally and allow users to refine selections through masking controls. The application supports 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit image documents across RGB, CMYK, Lab, and grayscale color spaces. ICC color management and soft proofing capabilities help users evaluate color representation for different output requirements. PhotoCraft supports offline editing and is distributed for macOS, Windows, and Linux, with additional access through a WebAssembly build and source code available on GitHub.

Top notch open source Photoshop alternative
Date: Oct 10 2026SummaryOverall, PhotoCraft is one of the most interesting open-source creative tools I have used recently. It combines a familiar professional editing workflow with native performance, real PSD compatibility, local processing, and unusually strong AI-agent automation.
PositiveWhat I like most is that it feels familiar immediately. The layout, tools, shortcuts, layers, masks, adjustment layers, and PSD workflow are close enough to traditional professional image editors that there is almost no learning curve. The performance is another big plus. PhotoCraft is written natively in Rust and uses the GPU instead of wrapping everything in Electron, so the whole app feels much more lightweight than I expected.
NegativeThe main downside is that it is still early alpha. There are still some tools, advanced typography features, generative AI capabilities, and plugin compatibility on the roadmap, so it is not a complete Photoshop replacement yet.
