What is Proton Drive?
Proton Drive is a secure cloud storage and collaboration platform built for professionals who manage sensitive data.
Whether you’re sharing internal documents, legal contracts, or client files, Proton Drive keeps your data private — by default.
Files are encrypted on your device before upload, and only you and your collaborators can access them. Even Proton can’t read your files. You can set passwords, add expiration dates, or revoke access instantly — so you’re always in control.
Each user gets 1 TB of storage, with the flexibility to add more as your team or projects grow.
Designed and hosted in Switzerland, Proton Drive is developed by the team behind Proton Mail and Proton VPN — trusted by over 100 million users worldwide. We’re independent, open source, and committed to keeping your data safe from surveillance and vendor lock-in.
Proton Drive helps you stay compliant, with support for:
- GDPR, HIPAA, ISO 27001, NIS2, and DORA
- Verified SOC 2 Type II audits
- No complex setup. No third-party tools required.
Built for security teams, law firms, healthcare providers, consultancies, and privacy-conscious organizations of all sizes.

New to Proton
Updated: Sep 02 2022SummaryI've been using their [paid] VPN and it seems solid. As I said above, their e-mail and their cloud storage is easy to use and it's nice to have the three services integrated into one provider.
PositiveThe web page designs are fresh, uncluttered and easy to read. I currently use MEGA and I'm considering paying Proton for full-service VPN, e-mail and Drive combined. The price for 500 GB of combined storage is around $7 / month prepaid on a 2-year basis. I think that's very reasonable if you're willing to commit.
I'm not a sharer but a daily user of cloud storage and Proton Drive's features suit me very well.NegativeHaving to pay for 2 years in advance presumes a willingness to commit. I understand it's a business model but MEGA provides 400 GB (cloud storage only) for about the same ($6) month-to-month.

File Sharing Option: Excellent, but quirky
Updated: May 31 2022SummaryUsing the Drive is great for personal use, not for Sharing, but the latter is one of the critical services associated with online storage.
PositiveThe 'share' link leads recipients to a page with two options: Download Folder and Get your own Proton Drive.
The shared folder is linked to the second option, not the first. But not reliably, only for those already logged in to the Proton service. For anyone else, the first option must be used, and then many more steps to access the actual file(s).NegativeThe link sharing is quite non-intuitive. Download Folder is what somebody new to the service will do, when sent a link to a shared folder. But to get to the actual shared files, you have to jump through hoops (download a zipped file, unzip it).
