What is Proton Drive?

Proton Drive's early access provides a highly secure cloud storage option characterized by end-to-end encryption, making it particularly suitable for safeguarding sensitive documents, utilizing the same encryption methods as Proton Mail and Proton Calendar. As we work on enhancing Proton Drive with new features, the current early access edition is already advantageous for various purposes, such as:

- Providing a secure backup for crucial documents, including medical records, financial statements, and identification copies.
- Enabling file storage in a cloud system with end-to-end encryption for seamless access across different devices.

In contrast to many traditional cloud storage services like Google Drive, which may scrutinize and analyze your files for profit or share your information with external parties, Proton Drive guarantees that your data is encrypted on your device before it is uploaded to our secure servers. This ensures that we are unable to access your files, and we uphold a rigorous policy against data surveillance, avoiding monetization of your information through ads. Our dedication to user privacy is steadfast as we aim to provide a reliable cloud storage solution, empowering users to store their data with confidence and peace of mind. Additionally, we believe that a trustworthy storage service should prioritize users' rights and privacy above all else.

    New to Proton

    Updated: Sep 02 2022
    Summary

I've been using their [paid] VPN and it seems solid. As I said above, their e-mail and their cloud storage is easy to use and it's nice to have the three services integrated into one provider.

    Positive

The web page designs are fresh, uncluttered and easy to read. I currently use MEGA and I'm considering paying Proton for full-service VPN, e-mail and Drive combined. The price for 500 GB of combined storage is around $7 / month prepaid on a 2-year basis. I think that's very reasonable if you're willing to commit.

I'm not a sharer but a daily user of cloud storage and Proton Drive's features suit me very well.

    Negative

Having to pay for 2 years in advance presumes a willingness to commit. I understand it's a business model but MEGA provides 400 GB (cloud storage only) for about the same ($6) month-to-month.

File Sharing Option: Excellent, but quirky

    Updated: May 31 2022
    Summary

Using the Drive is great for personal use, not for Sharing, but the latter is one of the critical services associated with online storage.

    Positive

The 'share' link leads recipients to a page with two options: Download Folder and Get your own Proton Drive.

The shared folder is linked to the second option, not the first. But not reliably, only for those already logged in to the Proton service. For anyone else, the first option must be used, and then many more steps to access the actual file(s).

    Negative

The link sharing is quite non-intuitive. Download Folder is what somebody new to the service will do, when sent a link to a shared folder. But to get to the actual shared files, you have to jump through hoops (download a zipped file, unzip it).
