What is ReactOS?

ReactOS is an operating system crafted to execute Windows software and drivers, providing an interface that feels familiar to users who are used to Windows systems. As a free and open-source project built entirely from scratch, it emulates the architecture of Windows in a manner similar to how Linux relates to Unix, while remaining fundamentally different from Linux. A key benefit of ReactOS is its ability for users to seamlessly operate their beloved Windows applications and drivers, thus making it an attractive choice for those looking to shift away from Windows. Furthermore, individuals have the opportunity to develop their own tailored versions of ReactOS, promoting personalization. Many users engage with open-source software on a regular basis, as programs like Firefox, LibreOffice, and numerous GNU-Linux distributions showcase the rich variety of open-source initiatives available today. The community-centric approach of open-source projects, including ReactOS, underscores the importance of contributions such as translations, donations, or coding efforts, all of which play a significant role in the growth and improvement of the project. By becoming involved in this vibrant ecosystem, users not only enhance ReactOS but also contribute to a legacy that can benefit future users and developers alike. This collaboration fosters a sense of community and shared purpose that is essential to the continued evolution of open-source software.

I'm only interested in the Beta and Final Product of ReactOS!

    Date: Mar 07 2023
    Summary

I can only take this open-source OS seriously once it has reached Beta-stage!
In the meantime, I'm quite safely running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit on my laptop and custom-built AMD-based PC!

    Positive

I've no doubt they added a Windows XP-theme to it, but I'd like the ability to choose Interface colors such as Red, School-Bus Orange, Yellow, Lime, Green, Turquoise, Windows-XP Blue, Blue-Violet, Violet(not synonymous with Purple), Pink, Vintage-Beige, Chocolate Brown, Carbon-Fiber Black, Windows-XP Silver & Copy-Paper White to apply.

    Negative

    The Alpha-stage email updates!
Why don't more people with fatter wallets than mine pitch in so that ReactOS can reach Beta-stage already, it's already 2023 and I want a finished product THIS YEAR!

    Using ReactOS at home

    Date: May 30 2022
    Summary

Good, I even managed to use my GPU, and this is quite impressive for an alpha OS. But there is still a lot to be done, and you will face some issues with remote printing, unless you are and advanced user.

    Positive

Well, it's free, and the OS can run a lot of stuff, like the game Skyrim and Microsoft Office. I also managed to use it to print and to use photoshop.

    Negative

It's hard to set up a workgroup or a domestic network, but take this with a grain of salt since it's a work in progress. ReactOS is a work in progress and it's at the level of Windows Vista, maybe windows 7 at best, but it will be a long time before it can be as responsive as windows 10/11.
