What is DroidAR?

DroidAR is a flexible framework crafted for creating Augmented Reality applications specifically on Android devices. It accommodates both marker-based and location-based AR experiences, making it suitable for a diverse range of applications. Users have the opportunity to try out a variety of demo applications that highlight its features (see the videos below). For the latest updates regarding DroidAR, please check our blog. The framework can be downloaded for free under the GNU GPL v3 license from our GitHub repository, with a commercial licensing option also available for those interested. Since its initial launch as an augmented reality development tool in 2010, DroidAR has seen ongoing improvements and the introduction of new features. This software development kit (SDK) empowers developers to effortlessly incorporate augmented reality capabilities into their own applications. We provide the SDK at no charge for non-commercial endeavors under an Open Source License. Over the years, it has established itself as one of the most widely used open-source augmented reality SDKs designed for the Android ecosystem, demonstrating its extensive popularity within the developer community. Additionally, the ongoing support and community contributions further enhance its robustness and feature set, ensuring that it remains relevant in the evolving landscape of augmented reality technology.

What is ARCore?

ARCore empowers users to craft groundbreaking augmented reality experiences that seamlessly blend digital content with the real world. This transformative technology alters the way people participate in various activities, including gaming, retail, education, and creative pursuits, all at an unparalleled level that only Google can achieve. As the cornerstone of Google’s augmented reality initiatives, ARCore provides a comprehensive array of APIs that allow smartphones to interpret their surroundings, grasp their environment, and engage with different types of information. Notably, many of these APIs are compatible with both Android and iOS platforms, enabling users to share augmented reality experiences across different devices. The motion tracking capability allows smartphones to determine their position in relation to the real world, enhancing the accuracy of interactions. Furthermore, environmental understanding equips devices to identify the dimensions and locations of various surfaces, such as floors, tables, and walls, whether they are horizontal, vertical, or slanted. The light estimation function also enables devices to evaluate ambient light conditions, ensuring that virtual elements are integrated realistically. By harnessing the phone’s camera, ARCore’s motion tracking technology pinpoints essential features in the environment, thereby enriching the overall immersive experience. In essence, ARCore marks a remarkable advancement in the ongoing evolution of technology, fundamentally altering how we navigate and connect with both the digital and physical realms while inviting endless possibilities for future applications.
