What is Global Fishing Watch?

A newly introduced mapping tool significantly improves our comprehension of oceanic conditions. Our goal is centered on creating and sharing knowledge about human interactions within marine ecosystems to foster fair and sustainable practices in ocean usage. Utilizing cutting-edge technology, we transform extensive datasets into actionable insights that can benefit various stakeholders. We strongly advocate that understanding human activities at sea is crucial for safeguarding the oceans for the benefit of all. By promoting transparency, regulatory agencies can more effectively monitor maritime operations, allowing fishermen to demonstrate their adherence to regulations without the need for the government to establish misconduct. Global Fishing Watch partners with leading scientific institutions to create innovative open-source datasets aimed at addressing some of the most urgent challenges facing our oceans. Our open-access visualizations and analytical resources not only facilitate scientific research but also motivate a transformative shift in how we manage ocean resources. This initiative not only improves data availability but also invites a wider audience to engage in the stewardship of our oceans, ultimately leading to a more collaborative approach to marine conservation. Through collective efforts, we aspire to ensure that the future of our oceans is sustainable and equitable for generations to come.

What is BigOceanData?

BigOceanData is a UK-based commercial vessel tracking and maritime intelligence platform. It is used by fleet operators and ship owners, marine insurers and risk managers, maritime security providers, port and terminal operators, fisheries and environmental bodies, and government and regulatory organisations. The platform is built for teams that share responsibility for a fleet or a region. Alerts, zones, vessel lists and investigation history sit in one shared workspace, so everyone works from the same operational picture rather than from separate tools and separate versions of the truth. Coverage comes from terrestrial AIS, satellite AIS and independent position sources including Inmarsat-C, Iridium and onboard devices, around 80 million position reports a day across more than 450,000 vessels and 4,500 ports. Because those sources share one pipeline, AIS Continuity keeps a vessel visible when its transponder is switched off, jammed or out of range, and every position records where it came from. Capabilities include real-time and historical tracking, voyage replay for investigating events, geofencing with configurable alerts, port activity monitoring, multi-year movement history, vessel risk assessment against historic piracy incident data, and an integrated Ship Security Alert (SSAS) System. Route optimisation, powered by ABB Ability Vessel Routing, weighs time, fuel, cost, ETA and safety thresholds rather than distance alone, and sits alongside live tracking so planned and actual passage can be compared directly. More than 200 organisations use BigOceanData worldwide, including Maersk, Kuehne+Nagel and Crisis24. 96% of clients renew. Plans are published rather than quote-only, starting at $189 per month, supporting fleets from 2 vessels to more than 500.
