What is Graphite?

Graphite is an open-source graphics editor currently in its alpha phase, providing a distinctive workflow that supports fully nondestructive editing by combining a layer-based compositing system with a procedural design engine that leverages nodes. Initially focused on vector editing, Graphite has evolved into an all-encompassing graphics suite that resembles a game engine more than traditional creative software, seamlessly integrating its Rust-based Graphene core with user-friendly tools for various creative tasks, such as vector graphics, raster image manipulation, animation, layout design, motion graphics, and visual effects compositing. Its cutting-edge editing framework includes a continuous node graph, allowing for virtually unlimited scalability for effects like boolean operations, procedural patterns, and fractals, while also offering artists intuitive layer stacks and node-controlled layers. Currently, Graphite functions as a lightweight offline web application, making it ideal for non-destructive workflows in areas such as technical illustrations, magazine layouts, and generative art projects, appealing to a broad spectrum of creative professionals. This adaptability not only enhances the creative process but also positions Graphite as a compelling tool for digital artists and designers looking to explore new possibilities in their work.

What is Boris FX Silhouette?

Silhouette by Boris FX is a professional rotoscoping, paint, compositing, and visual effects application used in high-end film, television, and post-production workflows. The software is known as an industry-standard roto and paint tool and has been trusted by top artists on major Hollywood productions for more than fifteen years. Silhouette provides advanced tools for rotoscoping, digital paint, cleanup, tracking, masking, keying, warping, morphing, cloning, compositing, and image processing. The platform includes more than 400 VFX nodes and bundles powerful Boris FX technologies such as Sapphire, Mocha Pro, Particle Illusion, and Continuum. Artists can use Silhouette’s node-based workflow to build complex visual effects setups with precise control. Its auto paint and machine learning features, including Mask ML and Matte Assist ML, help speed up repetitive roto and matte creation tasks. Mocha tracking and masking tools give artists additional options for solving challenging movement, object isolation, and screen replacement work. Silhouette can operate as a standalone application or as a plugin in supported Adobe and OFX hosts. The software supports macOS, Windows, and Linux, making it suitable for a wide range of studio pipelines. Subscription and licensing options are available through Boris FX, with a fully functional trial for artists who want to test the workflow before purchasing. By combining industry-proven roto and paint tools, ML-assisted masking, tracking, compositing, effects, and cross-platform support, Silhouette helps professional VFX teams deliver precise, production-ready results.
