What is Kopia?

Kopia boasts a powerful and flexible design, allowing it to support backups for a variety of devices, from compact laptops to large server infrastructures. As an open-source utility renowned for its speed and security, Kopia proficiently manages filesystem snapshots that are stored in remote locations. It transfers files and directories to a specified remote storage termed a Repository while maintaining a chronological archive of snapshots based on user-defined regulations. Each snapshot is created incrementally, which prevents previously captured data from being re-uploaded to the repository, thereby maximizing storage efficiency. Notably, when files are moved or renamed, Kopia intelligently recognizes that they remain the same data, thus avoiding unnecessary uploads. Additionally, the architecture permits multiple users or devices to access the same repository, ensuring that shared files are uploaded a single time, which saves bandwidth and storage resources. For the restoration process, Kopia allows users to mount the Repository's contents as a local disk, making it easy to utilize standard file copy tools for either complete or selective data restoration, enhancing both user experience and efficiency. This innovative strategy for backup and restoration highlights Kopia's commitment to providing a seamless and user-friendly solution tailored to various computing settings. In this way, Kopia stands out as a top choice for anyone looking to safeguard their data across different platforms.
