What is MergeMe?

MergeMe seamlessly integrates GitHub pull requests and GitLab merge requests into Slack, offering an efficient notification card that continuously updates for each PR/MR. Unlike the official Slack integrations for GitHub or GitLab that create a new message for every event, MergeMe refreshes a single message as its status changes—from opened to under review to approved and finally merged. During the review process, any comments are shown as replies in a thread under the notification card, which helps keep all feedback neatly organized and easily accessible. Additionally, MergeMe supports various code hosting services, such as GitHub, GitLab, and even self-hosted GitLab instances. Users have the ability to connect multiple git sources within a single Slack workspace, allowing them to assign each repository or project to specific Slack channels. It also maps usernames from GitHub and GitLab to Slack users to ensure effective notifications via @mentions for reviewers, while employing label-based routing to sort bugs, features, and documentation efforts into different channels. The setup is designed to be user-friendly and quick, taking approximately five minutes; users simply need to connect their Slack account, link their git provider through OAuth, a GitHub App, or a webhook URL for self-hosted setups, and configure the desired channel mappings. Importantly, MergeMe operates exclusively on webhook payloads, ensuring that it does not access any private source code. For users on the Free Hobby plan, the service offers one channel mapping and accommodates up to five users, making it a fantastic entry point for teams looking to improve their development processes and collaboration. Furthermore, as teams grow and require more mappings and users, they can easily transition to higher-tier plans to unlock additional features and enhancements.

What is GitBar?

GitBar is a lightweight application designed for the macOS menu bar, aimed at streamlining the management and monitoring of pull requests and issues across numerous development platforms such as GitHub, GitLab, and Azure DevOps. By integrating relevant development activities directly into the system's menubar, it allows users to oversee their workflow effortlessly, eliminating the need to switch between various browser tabs or applications. The app organizes pull requests into distinct categories: “Mine,” “Review,” and “All,” enabling developers to quickly identify their contributions, items requiring their attention, and the overall engagement within their team. Users gain immediate insights into each pull request via status badges that indicate approval status, whether the item is in draft form, existing merge conflicts, and results from the continuous integration pipeline, thus facilitating quicker decision-making without the necessity to delve into each individual request. Furthermore, GitBar includes issue tracking in addition to pull requests, offering a more holistic view of ongoing tasks across different repositories. This integrated approach not only streamlines workflows but also significantly boosts productivity for developers juggling multiple projects, making it an invaluable tool for efficient development management.
