What is MergeMe?

MergeMe seamlessly integrates GitHub pull requests and GitLab merge requests into Slack, offering an efficient notification card that continuously updates for each PR/MR. Unlike the official Slack integrations for GitHub or GitLab that create a new message for every event, MergeMe refreshes a single message as its status changes—from opened to under review to approved and finally merged. During the review process, any comments are shown as replies in a thread under the notification card, which helps keep all feedback neatly organized and easily accessible. Additionally, MergeMe supports various code hosting services, such as GitHub, GitLab, and even self-hosted GitLab instances. Users have the ability to connect multiple git sources within a single Slack workspace, allowing them to assign each repository or project to specific Slack channels. It also maps usernames from GitHub and GitLab to Slack users to ensure effective notifications via @mentions for reviewers, while employing label-based routing to sort bugs, features, and documentation efforts into different channels. The setup is designed to be user-friendly and quick, taking approximately five minutes; users simply need to connect their Slack account, link their git provider through OAuth, a GitHub App, or a webhook URL for self-hosted setups, and configure the desired channel mappings. Importantly, MergeMe operates exclusively on webhook payloads, ensuring that it does not access any private source code. For users on the Free Hobby plan, the service offers one channel mapping and accommodates up to five users, making it a fantastic entry point for teams looking to improve their development processes and collaboration. Furthermore, as teams grow and require more mappings and users, they can easily transition to higher-tier plans to unlock additional features and enhancements.

What is GitLab?

GitLab serves as a comprehensive DevOps platform that provides an all-in-one CI/CD toolchain, simplifying the workflow for teams. With a singular interface, unified conversations, and a consistent permission model, GitLab transforms collaboration among Security, Development, and Operations teams within a single application. This integration leads to significant reductions in development time and costs, minimizes application vulnerabilities, and accelerates software delivery processes. Furthermore, it enhances developer productivity by facilitating source code management that promotes collaboration, sharing, and coordination among the entire software development team. To expedite software delivery, GitLab enables efficient tracking and merging of branches, auditing of changes, and supports concurrent work efforts. Teams can review code, engage in discussions, share knowledge, and pinpoint defects, even in distributed settings, through asynchronous review processes. Additionally, the platform automates and tracks code reviews, generating reports that enhance transparency and continuous improvement in the development cycle. By offering these robust features, GitLab not only streamlines operations but also fosters a culture of collaboration and efficiency within development teams.
