What is Microsoft Copilot Studio?

Microsoft Copilot Studio is an adaptable and robust platform specifically crafted to assist users in developing, personalizing, and overseeing AI-driven agents that cater to a variety of business requirements. By merging the straightforwardness of low-code development with the sophisticated features of generative AI, this platform empowers users to construct intelligent agents capable of accessing and leveraging internal knowledge bases, executing intricate tasks through an extensive array of data connectors, and functioning autonomously to enhance workflows and boost efficiency. These AI agents can be effortlessly embedded into current workflows and launched across multiple channels, such as Microsoft 365 applications, internal websites, and mobile platforms, thereby ensuring they conform to the specific operational contexts of any company. Additionally, Copilot Studio is equipped with a comprehensive set of governance and management tools, enabling IT departments to retain centralized oversight of agent operations, assess performance through in-depth analytics, and implement security measures. This blend of user-friendliness, cutting-edge features, and thorough governance not only makes Microsoft Copilot Studio a crucial asset for organizations aiming to harness AI for business transformation, but it also fosters innovation by allowing teams to experiment and iterate on their AI solutions effectively. As a result, organizations can expect significant advancements in efficiency and productivity through the use of tailored AI agents.

What is Microsoft Autopilot?

Microsoft Autopilot is a long-running AI agent in Microsoft Copilot built to handle persistent, recurring, and proactive work across an organization. The product was previously called Scout and is positioned by Microsoft as a digital teammate that can continue operating without waiting for a prompt at every stage. Users can assign Autopilot a name, role, goal, and operating boundaries, after which it can monitor activity, follow up on threads, run recurring work, and resume projects over extended periods. One example provided by Microsoft is a supplier review process in which Autopilot can create the schedule and workback plan, prepare for meetings, manage follow-ups, and contact stakeholders for updates. Autopilot is cloud-hosted, so its work can continue while users are offline or focused elsewhere. Each Autopilot instance lives within the organization’s tenant and has its own identity, memory, computer, and workspace. It is built on Microsoft IQ, which connects enterprise knowledge, data, and workflows to provide context for the agent’s actions. Autopilot can surface across Microsoft 365 experiences including Teams, Outlook, chats, channels, and documents, where users can interact with it similarly to a colleague. The service is governed through organizational permissions, audit controls, and policy boundaries so companies can define what the agent is allowed to access and execute. Microsoft positions Autopilot alongside Cowork and Code as one of Copilot’s long-running agentic capabilities, with usage-based billing applied to this type of work. As announced on September 25, 2026, Autopilot was expanding to private preview at the end of September.
