What is OpenTelemetry?

OpenTelemetry offers a comprehensive and accessible solution for telemetry that significantly improves observability. It encompasses a collection of tools, APIs, and SDKs that facilitate the instrumentation, generation, collection, and exportation of telemetry data, including crucial metrics, logs, and traces necessary for assessing software performance and behavior. This framework supports various programming languages, enhancing its adaptability for a wide range of applications. Users can easily create and gather telemetry data from their software and services, and subsequently send this information to numerous analytical platforms for more profound insights. OpenTelemetry integrates smoothly with popular libraries and frameworks such as Spring, ASP.NET Core, and Express, among others, ensuring a user-friendly experience. Moreover, the installation and integration process is straightforward, typically requiring only a few lines of code to initiate. As an entirely free and open-source tool, OpenTelemetry has garnered substantial adoption and backing from leading entities within the observability sector, fostering a vibrant community and ongoing advancements. The community-driven approach ensures that developers continually receive updates and support, making it a highly attractive option for those looking to boost their software monitoring capabilities. Ultimately, OpenTelemetry stands out as a powerful ally for developers aiming to achieve enhanced visibility into their applications.

What is Cribl?

Cribl is an AI-powered telemetry data platform that enables organizations to collect, transform, route, search, and store operational information generated by enterprise technology environments. The software provides a vendor-neutral data architecture designed to support security operations, observability, application performance monitoring, incident investigations, and infrastructure management. Its Cribl Stream product processes logs, metrics, traces, and events from multiple sources, allowing teams to filter unnecessary information, enrich records, normalize formats, and direct data to selected destinations. Stream supports dynamic sampling, field removal, event transformation, and conversion of logs into metrics to reduce processing overhead and control data ingestion costs. Cribl Edge provides intelligent telemetry collection through centrally managed agents deployed across Windows, Linux, macOS, and Kubernetes environments. These agents automatically discover available telemetry sources and support data collection, lightweight processing, and forwarding to analytics platforms or storage systems. Cribl Lake offers scalable storage for security and observability information, enabling businesses to retain historical telemetry in open formats and replay records for investigations, compliance reviews, and operational analysis. Cribl Search combines federated search and lakehouse capabilities to investigate information across different storage locations without requiring traditional data migration or reindexing. Its AI-powered tools support natural language data transformation, automated schema mapping, investigation assistance, and detection of potentially sensitive information within telemetry streams. The platform also provides configurable access controls, data governance policies, centralized management, APIs, and integrations with SIEM systems, observability platforms, cloud services, and enterprise infrastructure tools.
