What is Serum?

The dream synthesizer remained an unrealized vision, imagined as a wavetable synthesizer that would provide outstanding sound quality, a captivating visual interface, and a creative workflow designed to make sound design a pleasurable activity instead of a tedious task, while simultaneously enabling users to explore sound creation in depth by importing, editing, and morphing wavetables that can be manipulated in real-time during playback. In this competitive landscape, Serum stands out as a prominent player, featuring a built-in wavetable editor that allows users to construct their own wavetables through various techniques. Furthermore, it supports the direct importation of audio files, offering an array of analytical tools to break down audio into individual waveforms. Users can import both single-cycle wavetables and multiple wavetables at once, taking advantage of built-in sorting options or rearranging them manually as necessary. There are capabilities for transitioning between different wavetables using standard linear interpolation or more sophisticated harmonic and spectral morphing methods. Additionally, the user interface supports direct waveform drawing, complete with grid-size snapping and an assortment of shape tools to foster creativity and accuracy. The extensive flexibility and robust functionality of Serum establish it as an essential resource for sound designers who seek both ease of use and profound depth in their creative endeavors, making it a go-to choice for those looking to push the boundaries of sound synthesis.

What is Hive 2?

Hive 2, developed by u-he, serves as a versatile software synthesizer engineered to deliver outstanding sound quality while ensuring a seamless workflow. It features two oscillators capable of generating classic waveforms or 2D wavetables, each supporting up to 16x unison along with modifiable sub-oscillators. Users can explore three distinct sound engines—normal, dirty, and clean—that allow for extensive customization of their sound profiles. In addition, Hive 2 incorporates an easy-to-use drag-and-drop modulation assignment system, a modulation matrix with 12 slots that includes various modifiers, and four customizable XY control pads for dynamic sound manipulation. Significant highlights include an arpeggiator, a step sequencer with real-time recording options, and a unique 8-step shape sequencer that provides four independent outputs, as well as a diverse array of seven rearrangeable effects like distortion, chorus, delay, phaser, EQ, reverb, and compressor. The user interface is adjustable from 70% to 200%, complemented by an alternative Izmo skin for those seeking aesthetic variety. In addition to these features, Hive 2 comes with over 2,400 factory presets that are compatible with NKS integration, enhancing its utility for music production. This rich array of functionalities positions Hive 2 as a compelling choice for both beginner and seasoned sound designers, making it a valuable addition to any music production toolkit. The blend of intuitive design and advanced capabilities ensures that users can achieve their creative visions with ease.
