What is Sprites?

Sprites by Fly.io is a platform for creating stateful sandbox environments that run arbitrary code inside hardware-isolated Linux computers. A Sprite is designed to answer the question of where to safely run a blob of code, whether that code comes from an AI agent, a developer workflow, a user-uploaded binary, or an application process. Unlike short-lived stateless sandboxes, Sprites are persistent environments that can keep files, state, and execution context across runs. The platform supports checkpoint and restore so workloads can pause, resume, and recover without rebuilding everything from scratch. Sprites use a fast directly attached NVMe filesystem for active work and continuously sync that filesystem to durable external object storage. This storage model gives developers a normal Linux disk experience while supporting durable persistence and automatic growth. Developers can install the Sprites CLI, log in, create a Sprite, run commands, and connect directly to a Sprite console. The platform also provides a REST API and language support for JavaScript, Go, Elixir, and Python. Sprites include capabilities around persistence, checkpoints, Sprite URLs, sandbox VMs, and network policy for controlling how environments run and connect. Pricing is based on actual usage across CPU hours, memory hours, hot storage, and cold storage, making it practical for bursty workloads like coding agents or lightweight web apps. By combining hardware isolation, Linux compatibility, stateful persistence, checkpointing, durable storage, APIs, and usage-based billing, Sprites gives developers a flexible execution layer for AI agents, sandboxed code, and persistent application environments.

What is OpenAI Agents API?

The Agents API provides a robust platform for developers to build and manage cloud agents using the same foundational framework that powers Codex, all while being supervised by OpenAI. With a straightforward API request, users can quickly set up a fully functional agent by specifying the intended task, model, tools, and environment, with OpenAI taking charge of the underlying infrastructure. Developers have the option to deploy their agents in various environments: within an OpenAI-managed sandbox, on their own servers, or through approved sandbox partners. These OpenAI-managed environments ensure a secure setting for agents to execute code, interact with files, and leverage packages, skills, and plugins to produce desired outputs. Tailored for tasks that demand prolonged operation, the API incorporates automatic context compaction, which helps retain essential information across multiple context windows during sessions. Furthermore, the tool search feature intelligently loads only the necessary definitions when required, while programmatic tool invocation enables agents to make simultaneous calls, chain related tasks together, and seamlessly filter or merge results in code. This all-encompassing strategy not only boosts operational efficiency but also equips developers with the tools to create increasingly complex applications, thus pushing the boundaries of what's possible with cloud-based agents. As a result, the Agents API stands as a transformative resource in the realm of cloud computing, facilitating innovative solutions and driving technological advancement.
