What is VisualEditor?

The VisualEditor initiative led by the Editing team aims to create a reliable rich-text editor tailored for MediaWiki. This editor, which operates as a MediaWiki extension with support from the Parsoid project for HTML+RDFa, is architected to ensure that its fundamental features can function independently of MediaWiki, Parsoid, or Node.js. Since its launch in 2020, VisualEditor has been available to all users on MediaWiki.org and is also implemented across nearly all versions of Wikipedia and Wikivoyage. For numerous other Wikimedia projects and languages, it is provided as an optional Beta Feature for those logged in. While VisualEditor can be accessed in certain namespaces, including the main namespace, it is generally not available in discussion or template namespaces. One of the major hurdles facing the Wikimedia movement is the decline in the growth of new contributors. In response to this challenge, VisualEditor was introduced to remove unnecessary technical barriers associated with Wikimedia’s editing interface, which is critical for increasing the contributor base. By streamlining the editing experience, this initiative not only seeks to improve user satisfaction but also aims to create a more welcoming atmosphere for prospective contributors, ultimately fostering a thriving community. As a result, VisualEditor represents a significant step towards revitalizing engagement with Wikimedia projects.
