What is LibreCAD?

LibreCAD is a free and open-source CAD application that operates on Windows, macOS, and Linux platforms. The software boasts a robust support system and comprehensive documentation, thanks to a vibrant community of users, contributors, and developers. The project originated from an attempt to incorporate CAM functionalities into the community edition of QCad for the Mechmate CNC router. Since QCad CE was built on the outdated Qt3 library, a transition to Qt4 was essential for further enhancements, which led to the temporary establishment of CADuntu. However, after a short duration, the community decided that the name was unsuitable and began discussions to select a more appropriate title, ultimately leading to the adoption of LibreCAD. The shift of the rendering engine to Qt4 required substantial effort, and initially, LibreCAD depended on the Qt3 support library. This transition was successfully finalized during the development of the 2.0.0 series, with significant contributions from the chief developer, Rallaz, marking LibreCAD's journey towards complete independence from Qt3, aside from the 1.0.0 series. This evolution not only improved the functionality of the software but also reinforced its reputation and standing within the CAD community, paving the way for future innovations and enhancements.

What is CADCraft?

CADCraft is a free and open-source software application tailored for computer-aided design and drafting, allowing users to effortlessly create and modify technical drawings. The program integrates a command line interface alongside a visual drawing area, housing diverse tools for manipulating 2D geometries, managing object snaps, structuring layers, and modifying properties, dimensions, hatches, blocks, layouts, and plotting features. It can read and write in DXF and DWG formats, and also facilitates exports to PDF, SVG, and PNG formats. Users have the capability to design floor plans, develop mechanical diagrams, and other two-dimensional graphics, which can be systematically arranged into sheets utilizing paper-space layouts and viewports. CADCraft functions as a native desktop application on Windows, macOS, and Linux platforms, and it also offers a WebAssembly-compatible build for browser-based use. Moreover, to support more sophisticated functionalities, it incorporates a command-line utility, a JSON control protocol, and a Model Context Protocol server, enabling the automation of drawing, inspection, and rendering tasks through scripting. As the project continues to grow, users can look forward to ongoing updates and the introduction of innovative features to further improve their design experience. In summary, CADCraft serves as a versatile and powerful toolkit suitable for both novice and seasoned designers, making technical drawing more accessible and efficient.
