What is Mobian?

Mobian aims to merge the classic Debian distribution with the Phone Shell (phosh) project, ensuring compatibility across a variety of mobile devices, including the Pinephone. Its primary objective is to minimize the distinctive features of Mobian by contributing enhancements back to the original projects, a practice referred to as "upstreaming." Incorporating Phosh, which is developed by Purism, Mobian utilizes widely-used modern Gnome technologies such as GTK, GSettings, and DBus, all operating on a wlroots-based Wayland compositor known as phoc. The operating system is tailored not just for smartphones like the Pinephone, but also for tablets like the Pinetab and the Librem 5, broadening its usability across different device types. In this effort, Mobian seeks to maintain a delicate balance between necessary custom patches and packages that boost performance while aiming to lessen reliance on modifications unique to Mobian. This dual approach not only improves the overall user experience but also fosters the preservation of the upstream projects' integrity. Ultimately, Mobian's commitment to collaboration and compatibility signifies a step towards a more unified mobile operating system landscape.

What is Guix?

Guix represents an advanced distribution of the GNU operating system, developed by the GNU Project, that prioritizes user independence. It boasts functionalities like transactional upgrades and the ability to roll back changes, in addition to allowing unprivileged package management, which greatly enhances user flexibility. When used as a standalone distribution, Guix facilitates declarative system configurations that promote transparency and reproducibility in operating systems. It also integrates Guile Scheme APIs featuring high-level embedded domain-specific languages (EDSLs) for the purpose of defining packages and comprehensive system configurations. With a vast repository that houses thousands of packages, Guix grants users access to a diverse array of applications, system utilities, documentation, fonts, and other digital tools, all easily installable via the GNU Guix package manager. Moreover, Guix cultivates a vibrant community that supports collaboration and knowledge sharing, making it an invaluable asset for both developers and users. This community aspect enhances the overall experience, fostering a sense of belonging among those who contribute to and utilize the system.
