What is OpenFGA?

OpenFGA is an open-source framework for authorization that enables developers to build intricate access control systems using a user-friendly modeling language and API endpoints. Influenced by the principles outlined in Google's Zanzibar paper, it supports multiple access control models, such as Relationship-Based Access Control (ReBAC), Role-Based Access Control (RBAC), and Attribute-Based Access Control (ABAC). The framework offers software development kits (SDKs) in various programming languages like Java, .NET, JavaScript, Go, and Python, enhancing its versatility for diverse applications. Engineered for high performance, OpenFGA can carry out authorization checks in just milliseconds, making it suitable for both new startups and established organizations. As a project under the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), OpenFGA emphasizes transparency and community involvement, inviting developers to engage in its ongoing development and governance. This collaborative effort not only adds value to the project but also guarantees that it adapts to the evolving demands of its user base. By fostering a vibrant community, OpenFGA aims to continuously improve and innovate its features, ensuring relevance in a rapidly changing technological landscape.

What is Cerbos?

Cerbos is an all-encompassing platform for authorization management, crafted to define, implement, and evaluate access control policies across a range of applications and services. It empowers developers to leverage its policy decision point (PDP) for assessing authorization requests, while also allowing teams to formulate and manage policies based on roles, relationships, and attributes. With the flexibility to support workflows that are either local, self-hosted, or cloud-based, Cerbos delivers features such as policy testing, observability, and audit logs, which facilitate the examination of authorization decisions. Furthermore, Cerbos Hub provides a managed environment for organizing and sharing policies, while the open-source Cerbos PDP is well-suited for deployment alongside application workloads. This platform is specifically designed for engineering, security, and product teams that require dependable and comprehensive authorization solutions for users, services, and other identities within distributed systems. By improving security and simplifying the management of intricate access-control situations across various environments, Cerbos ultimately enhances operational efficiency and trust in the authorization processes.
