What is System Advisor Model (SAM)?

Photovoltaic systems exhibit a broad range, from compact setups on home rooftops to large-scale utility projects that span vast areas. Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) systems serve the purpose of electricity generation and come in different configurations, including parabolic troughs, power towers, and linear Fresnel systems. Many of these projects are supported by power purchase agreements (PPAs), which link the energy systems to the electrical grid at specified interconnection points, enabling the monetization of electricity through sales. The ownership structure of such projects can vary, with options for individual ownership or collaborative partnerships that might involve flip or leaseback agreements. In some cases, a third-party ownership model is adopted, where the solar installation is located on a customer's property, yet the ownership remains with an external developer who pays the property owner for the generated electricity, usually through a PPA or lease. This approach not only encourages the wider adoption of solar technology but also creates financial benefits for property owners willing to engage in sustainable energy practices. As a result, these diverse ownership models contribute to the overall growth and accessibility of renewable energy across different sectors.

What is Solcast?

Solcast is an innovative cloud-based platform that provides accurate and trustworthy historical, current, and forecasted solar irradiance, weather, and photovoltaic (PV) power information specifically designed for the renewable energy sector, utilizing a flexible REST API along with various developer tools. By continuously tracking real-time satellite cloud coverage and combining it with advanced weather forecasting models, Solcast is capable of delivering solar irradiance forecasts that extend from five minutes to 14 days in advance, demonstrating remarkable spatial and temporal precision, while also supplying historical data that dates back to 2007, which is essential for evaluating performance. The system supports multiple PV power forecasting models, including Rooftop PV, Advanced PV, and Premium PV, which are designed to assess both the actual and expected output of solar installations of any scale. Its API offers data in accessible formats such as JSON or CSV, allowing for straightforward integration with energy management software, analytical tools, or customized workflows. Furthermore, developers have the option to employ native HTTP clients or software development kits (SDKs) like Python and C#, complete with example codes, to effortlessly retrieve and utilize this valuable data. This all-encompassing methodology not only enhances the efficiency of solar energy operations but also serves as a critical asset for stakeholders aiming to maximize their renewable energy investments. Consequently, Solcast stands out as an essential tool for those seeking to leverage solar energy to its fullest potential.
