What is nano?

GNU nano was developed as a free substitute for the Pico text editor, which is included in the Pine email suite from the University of Washington. The aim was to replicate the functionality of Pico while adding more features. The Debian GNU/Linux distribution, known for its dedication to distributing truly "free" software—defined as software that poses no restrictions on redistribution—decided against including binary packages for Pine or Pico. This left many users in a challenging situation; although they valued these applications, the versions available did not conform to the GNU criteria for free software. GNU nano is designed to be a straightforward and efficient text editor. Beyond basic text editing functions, nano offers features like undo/redo, syntax highlighting, interactive search-and-replace, automatic indentation, line numbering, word completion, file locking, backup files, and support for various languages. A significant update occurred with the launch of version 4.0, which stopped the automatic wrapping of excessively long lines by default, giving users greater control over their text formatting. This modification demonstrates the ongoing development of the software to adapt to user preferences and requirements, illustrating its commitment to continuous improvement. As a result, users find themselves with a more customizable editing experience.

What is Caxton?

Caxton is a remarkable text editing application tailored specifically for macOS, capable of managing files that often challenge other editors, including large multi-gigabyte logs, CSV files that surpass Excel's 1,048,576-row limit, SQL dumps, and compact minified code. By employing memory-mapping techniques instead of traditional RAM loading, Caxton can swiftly open a 10 GB log with 80 million lines, conduct comprehensive searches across the entire file that yield 1.6 million results in merely 1.3 seconds, all while keeping memory consumption under 200 MB. Furthermore, users can work with extensive CSV files in a dynamic, sortable grid format, sorting through 2 million rows numerically in just 8.2 seconds, with additional capabilities for filtering, deduplication, and cell editing, while preserving the original plain CSV format during the save process. The application boasts extensive find and replace functionalities, allowing users to execute replacement actions across 1.6 million entries in just 1.7 seconds with an easy single undo option, along with batch replacement and find-in-files features that include previews and backup options. Completely built on AppKit and Swift, without relying on Electron, Caxton is fully notarized and works flawlessly without an internet connection. Each performance claim is documented transparently, with methodologies available at caxton.app/docs/benchmarks, and users can dive into a 7-day free trial with no credit card needed, enabling them to explore all features without any financial risk. This makes Caxton not only a powerful tool for managing large datasets but also an exceptional solution for complex text editing tasks, ensuring that users have everything they need at their fingertips. Whether for professional use or personal projects, Caxton stands out as a top-tier choice in the realm of text editing software.
