What is refbase?

refbase is a web-based, platform-independent reference database for managing scientific literature and citations. The software provides a multi-user interface so research groups, libraries, departments, and institutions can manage bibliographic records collaboratively. refbase supports importing and exporting references in a wide range of formats, including BibTeX, EndNote, RIS, PubMed, ISI Web of Science, CSA Illumina, RefWorks, MODS XML, OpenOffice, and MS Word. Users can create formatted citation lists in HTML, RTF, PDF, or LaTeX. The platform includes powerful searching so users can locate references across the database more efficiently. RSS support helps users track updates and reference activity. refbase also provides OpenSearch and SRU/W web services for easier access by external clients and systems. Its support for unAPI and COinS metadata helps make citation data accessible to search engines and compatible tools. The software can be downloaded from SourceForge, with stable releases available alongside source code from the refbase Subversion repository. Demo databases and documentation are available for users who want to test the system, install it, update it, or troubleshoot their setup. By combining online reference management, multi-user access, citation formatting, import and export tools, search, RSS, web services, and metadata support, refbase helps organizations manage scientific literature through an accessible web interface.

What is MEDLINE?

MEDLINE is the premier bibliographic database of the National Library of Medicine (NLM), containing more than 29 million citations to journal articles that primarily cover life sciences and biomedicine. An important feature of MEDLINE is its utilization of the NLM Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) for indexing, which significantly improves both searchability and organization of the records. Serving as a fundamental element of PubMed, which is a vast literature database overseen by the NLM's National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), MEDLINE effectively connects users to a wealth of information. This database represents the digital advancement of the MEDical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System (MEDLARS), which was first introduced in 1964. The process of selecting journals for MEDLINE is heavily influenced by the Literature Selection Technical Review Committee (LSTRC), consisting of external specialists appointed by the NIH. The collection includes literature published from 1966 to the current day, along with certain significant works from prior years, thus offering researchers an extensive historical backdrop. In essence, MEDLINE serves as an indispensable tool for healthcare and academic professionals in need of trustworthy and well-organized biomedical literature, making it a cornerstone for research and discovery in the field.
