What is telemetry.dev?

telemetry.dev functions as an advanced observability platform that seamlessly integrates with OpenTelemetry, specifically tailored for AI agents and applications that utilize large language models. It empowers developers to track a variety of components, including model invocations, tool operations, data retrievals, logging, and performance metrics, all while facilitating the analysis of issues related to failures, delays, token usage, and cost forecasts. Furthermore, users are able to make comparisons between different models, service providers, and operational environments, which provides richer insights into overall performance metrics. The platform boasts built-in support for both TypeScript and Python SDKs, as well as a multitude of integrations for different providers and frameworks, in addition to standard OTLP/HTTP data ingestion methods. To prioritize data privacy and security, it features environment-specific capture controls, SDK masking techniques, and server-side redaction, which allows teams to handle sensitive information linked to prompts, responses, and telemetry data with care. This extensive range of functionalities not only optimizes the performance of AI applications but also strengthens observability within organizational frameworks, ultimately driving enhanced operational efficiency. With such capabilities, organizations can better manage and refine their AI strategies to meet evolving demands.

What is Spanlens?

Spanlens is an open-source observability tool under the MIT license that allows developers to seamlessly monitor their applications' interactions with various services, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and others. The integration is remarkably straightforward; developers can either modify the client's baseURL to point to the Spanlens proxy with a single line of code or use the command "npx @spanlens/cli init," which activates a wizard for automatic code adjustments. After integration, the platform logs all requests in detail, tracking essential metrics such as model type, token counts, latency, costs, and the entire prompt and response body, while also effectively reconstructing streaming outputs. The platform's dashboard converts this extensive log information into valuable operational insights. With cost tracking capabilities, users can analyze their spending by specific requests, models, and users, along with differentiating prompt-cache tokens to clarify actual savings beyond total costs. Furthermore, agent tracing illustrates multi-step workflows through Gantt waterfalls and node-and-edge graphs, highlighting critical paths to help developers identify the slowest dependencies in complex scenarios. This thorough approach not only improves visibility but also equips users with the tools necessary to refine their model interactions for enhanced efficiency and effective cost management, fostering a more productive development environment overall.
