OpenAI Dots are always-on AI agents built to manage ongoing responsibilities and continue working on projects when the user is focused elsewhere. Powered by GPT-6 Astra, dots can proactively identify next steps, perform tasks, monitor developments, and return completed work or decisions requiring human judgment. Each dot can start with context from the user's ChatGPT memory and use Codex, connected tools, and its own cloud computer to perform work. Users decide which applications a dot can access, what responsibilities it should prioritize, and how tasks should be completed. A dot can be assigned an entire project or a smaller workflow and continue making progress between individual ChatGPT conversations. Example use cases include tracking product and revenue metrics while maintaining investor presentations, evaluating customer requirements for sales opportunities, managing API migrations, implementing software improvements based on customer feedback, and preparing content from transcripts.     Summary

    Overall, Dots feels like one of the clearest steps toward AI agents becoming actual digital coworkers. It is most useful when I have work that needs persistence, tools, and follow-through rather than another one-off answer. Feels like OpenAI's answer to Grok Bot and OpenClaw/Hermes Agent.

    Positive

    What I like most is that it feels less like “using AI” and more like delegating work. I can give a Dot an ongoing objective, let it work across apps and the web, and have it come back when it needs input instead of babysitting every step. The always-on part is the biggest difference. Recurring research, follow-ups, monitoring, admin work, and multi-step workflows make a lot more sense when the agent can keep working after I leave the chat. I also like that each Dot gets its own cloud computer and browser. That gives it a much more complete working environment than a normal chatbot, especially when a task involves websites, files, tools, and multiple systems.

    Negative

    The downside is that something this capable needs careful permissions. I would be conservative about local computer access, sensitive accounts, external messages, and anything destructive until I was comfortable with the rules and approval flow.
