What is RustDesk?
RustDesk provides a robust open-source remote control platform that facilitates self-hosting and prioritizes security, all while requiring minimal initial setup. This versatile software works seamlessly across various operating systems, including Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and web browsers. By supporting a range of codecs like VP8, VP9, AV1, H264, and H265, it enables efficient video streaming capabilities. Users can effortlessly establish a self-hosted infrastructure, giving them control over their data and privacy. The application employs a peer-to-peer connection that is fortified with end-to-end encryption using NaCl, ensuring the confidentiality of user information. Windows users benefit from the ease of operation, as administrative privileges or installations are unnecessary; permissions can be adjusted locally or remotely as required. We strive to keep the user experience as intuitive as possible, with a commitment to ongoing simplification. The project enjoys robust backing from a proactive community of early adopters, contributors, and supporters. To maximize the benefits of RustDesk, it is recommended to set up your own server, with the necessary ports for self-hosting varying based on your unique environment and application use. Moreover, a clear understanding of these requirements can significantly improve your overall experience while utilizing RustDesk, making it an even more efficient tool for remote management.

They offered hope and then shrugged and took it away.
Date: Apr 02 2025Summary****If you are a small IT business looking to replace expensive remote desktop solutions, this is NOT your answer****
I've wasted days and days and was told that RustDesk Server Pro could do everything TeamViewer does for less. I set up a self hosting server, handled the networking, etc, and it worked quite well. However, I needed to test the custom client to make sure it would work as TeamViewer's custom branded QS module does. They could not give me a free trial, which is understandable, so I paid a whopping $1 for a 5-day one, which allowed me to install the Self-Hosted Server Pro, but every link for me to try the custom client just took me the a help doc about upgrading licenses. And then the upgrade license buttons linked to the help docs too and the buttons that were supposed to be there did not match up with the console I was presented with (every button just went back to the same help doc). I emailed asking to buy a custom license so I could see if because after setting the slider to the number of endpoints I have, it was going to cost way more than TeamViewer. I emailed them again telling them the link they sent me is still showing more than I pay already and was then told to "just start with 100 devices and then upgrade", but they could not give me a price. When I AGAIN explained my business, I was told, "Sorry, you might have to use the other solution [TeamViewer], I do not think our license model is ok for you." I've since emailed and requested someone from Sales to reach out and if we can get this resolved, I'll improve my rating.Positive- Self Hosting

- This means nothing, but the form told me I needed at least 100 characters in the text box. Lorem ipsum quick red fox yadda yadda yadda.Negative- Additional charge PER endpoint - regardless if you need unattended access or not

RustDesk
Date: Jan 28 2025SummaryOverall, RustDesk is much better than any other remote connector I have used previously.
It was the last resort after figuring out what was AnyDesk being used for.PositiveUnattended Mode plus the OTP Mode, faster connection and better display and resolution handling on Windows, Mac, and Linux.
NegativeRemote Connection have no 'on-premises' options just like AnyDesk.
