Although this a wonderful method of storing data, one does need to follow the minimum requirements when putting together a system. Remember, you can never have too much RAM. I have purchased my first FreeNAS 32 GB RAM, 8 bay, 4 TB drive system that is still running fine and later purchased a TrueNAS 64 GB RAM, 8 bay system and populated it with 8 TB WD Red Pro then set up the system. I am in the process of buying 16 TB drives and upgrading my new system, then I will take the 8 TB drives and upgrade the old system with those drives.

By using scrubs, I know that drives going bad can be spotted early, and it can be replaced and insure that data is preserved. Before getting this system, I had photos that were ruined by bit rot (it developed a color stripe down the middle) that I could not correct in Photoshop.

This is not a backup solution! ZFS running on BSD will let you do stupid things with the setup, so go to the TrueNAS forum to check what you are about to do to insure no self inflicted injuries! I have my systems set up as RAIDZ2. RAIDZ2 allows the failure of 2 disks before data loss occurs. That does not mean you can leave it with 1 dead drive and fiddle around to replace the bad drive, but in case another drive goes belly up while the re-silvering process (rebuilding process for the replaced drive) you are still covered. I know of people who where rebuilding RAID5 arrays have had another drive die during the re-silver process and have lost everything.

Great product and very easy to install and admin. The well thought out UI makes using ZFS for storage very simple. There is plenty of documentation available and a lot of free user support in forums and other places online.

I don't like that it uses k8s for virtualization. I wish it used something lighter, like plain old docker or one of the variants.

- Kubernetes doesn't play nice with the Kubernetes-ecosystem by default. It's possible, but not completely supported or as easy as another Kubernetes distro makes it. TrueNAS relies on its interfaces and that's a shame. The 3rd party packages focus more on this, but evolving. I hope this will change in the future.

- apps/Kubernetes ecosystem is evolving and hopefully will continue to. A lot of apps, but stability of 3rd party updates is something the community should focus on. It's a start currently.

Customization is key, TrueNAS offers almost everything with this feature.

I was looking at Synology for a while but I'm a FOSS person and a long time Linux user so I chose TrueNAS over Synology. I also had an older Dell computer that I re-purposed and it's working wonderfully. My only out of pocket costs were the NAS hard drives which I would've had to buy if I had gone with the Synology.

After getting it up and running it just works. Does everything a good NAS should do. I set it up mainly for my Plex media server and secondarily as a backup storage for my wife's accounting files. It's part of our 3 location backup.

For a novice like me it was a little tough to figure things out but several great YouTubers give simple step videos explaining how to do things and I got it up and running in short time.

Overall TrueNAS is the best NAS/SAN software that I have used over the years and I have tried several. I would go TrueNAS over anything else all day.

I love everything there is about TrueNAS and have been a long standing user for several users going back to the FreeNAS days and beyond.

One of the biggest cons I have it not a TrueNAS issue but rather a FreeBSD issue in 13. When using VLANs with Jails or VM's, my 10G fiber is useless unless you disable HW offloading on the nic. FreeBSD needs a fix and thus would fix TrueNAS!

Generally well performing and easy NAS system to setup and use.
Also underlying ZFS is working quite well.

DIY possible on own hardware and it was quite easy to setup.

Access control a bit confusing and also NFS / Samba related configurations.

Modifying existing Storages is very tricky (extending size etc).

The first thing to note is that TrueNAS is a NAS first and Scale adds additional functionality for Apps and Virtualization. I am certain improvements will be made over time.

I started using FreeNAS in 2011 to store media and document files. TrueNAS Scale has been a game changer - allowing Apps and hardware passthrough.

Though I applaud IX Systems work on TrueNAS Scale there is more to do for the Home Labbers out there. Improved App and Virtualization in both capability and reliability would be appreciated. The improvements since TrueNAS Scale's announcement have not gone unnoticed, but there is more work to do!

Used core at home and at work for years, was super excited about scale and was an earlier adopter. It's awesome to have this powerful of a service hosted on my own hardware.

There are a lot of things to love, they make many things that were "possible" in other softwares easy to access and configure, with fairly idiot proof defaults.

Scale rolled out with to many bugs, and the official apps are to limited in availability, the answer seemed to be true charts as a semi affiliated project, but they keep breaking their base image.

It's been a solid trouble free ride with a plethora of knowledgeable individuals on the TrueNAS forums that are more than willing to help you out.

It just works with Plex and UniFi Controller running in separate jails and a strong community to help out.

Not really anything to dislike as far as my use case goes.

I think TrueNAS is a great open source software for people new in server hosting or professionals to help them accomplish what they are seeking to do.

TrueNAS is a professional-grade product made available to those who want full control of their storage solution.

Very sophisticated interface -- a big step up from my old FreeNAS box and head and shoulders above other commercial NAS products I have used.

Occasionally TrueNAS loses its connection after an update.

I've been using TrueNAS (fka FreeNAS) for over a decade. I am quite happy with it and constantly recommend it to others.

Both of the TrueNAS products (CORE and SCALE) are easy enough to use to stand up your own NAS at home and get it using. Its management interface is easy enough to use.

TrueNAS is an appliance OS and it's understandable, but still frustrating, when you try and push beyond the boundaries of what can be done.

TrueNAS SCALE's containers implementation seems restrictive and frustrating compared to other products. Both TrueNAS CORE and SCALE's virtualization are quite basic.

Would 100% recommend to others! First time setting this up for home use with no issues. Getting great read/write performance.

My overall experience has been super great even my wife likes it and my dog and my kid Frodo likes it too.

Ability to use my own hardware. Ease of management. Well put together interface. Options to configure storage.

It's blue a lot of the time. Super duper rectangular.

Painless and easy to setup, administer and use! Love how simple getting SMB, NFS and iSCSI up and running was.

Using SCALE in a Proxmox VM - it just works. Love the flexibility to add apps and the Debian base. Makes ZFS child-proof!

Some difficulty with pass-through, but that was more of a PM/hp problem.
