I trust my data to iX Systems and TrueNAS Scale (and previously Core). Performance and reliability have been rock solid since day 1.

I love that I can run the software on my own hardware and get the same, rock solid performance as the enterprise offerings. I can learn at home and apply everything in the enterprise.

The one gripe I have is related to applications on Scale. Having the ability to run Linux containers was a huge draw for me and generally they work well, but the k3s implementation is very limiting.

Lovin’ it. Migration from Synology to my new home build TrueNAS, and selling the old locked in solution.

The starting price can’t be beaten.

The freedom of really customized install and community support while doing it is awesome.

Finding how to do it the best way for own situation can be more work.

Overall a very capable and handy OS. Has lots of features and is quite stable. Only the web GUI is sometimes a bit slow.

They have become a very powerful alternative to other companies who charge a mint for their software not so much the hardware.

Also, a fine point I've noticed is that almost all their devices I've use have Supermicro boards in them. I'm quite fond of Supermicro enabled servers.

I love that TrueNAS is free.

Big fan of their quick support on the enterprise side. even thought we operate the smaller systems.

I've effectively cut down my microsoft licensing by operating smb shares on our system at work. No need for a file server running expensive MS licensing.

The Bluefin / Scale version allows for many apps / dockers to setup with relative ease.

Core runs on BSD that's fine but its irritating that they cannot copy to usb 3.0 devices.

Scale can, but cannot be fully supported with enterprise support so we are stuck with the enterprise version.

This isn't a concern for the average customer using TrueNAS Scale though.

Been using it for years! While there have been bugs those bugs generally get ironed out and the community is super helpful!

They don't hold back to much on the open source community.
Even more bells and whistles with their core product.

I would chose TrueNAS 9 times out of 10 else if I have a QNAP of more than 4 bays. I would also love to see a better monitoring for the temperature.

Everything I need, simple to setup and complex enough to fine tune.

The GUI is easy to go around but it could be improved a little bit.

Not supposed to be ran on a USB key but that's a small down for a big up.

Great, I've been using it for approx 8 years and my needs have evolved because of capabilities, initially for NAD only I now extensively use its virtualization with bhyve capabilities to run BSD and GNU/Linux flavors for testing/labs and experimentation.

Aside from storage and onsite backup it has enabled me to experiment with my own virtualized cloud/lab, it is great fun has is surprisingly stable!

It makes me want to spend a lot more money on server grade hardware to do more virtualization.

So many false flags and hopes are introduced into the marketplace hoping they will be the next "big idea" product or service; TrueNAS seems to have accomplished this goal. Their product lineup is mature and robust.

TrueNAS is truly a great platform that has humble beginnings and is poised to be a leader in the storage marketplace.

There is nothing to dislike. Your data is your data, when and where you want it; setup there is little to no chance you will experience any data loss. I wish there was a mini version that was based on only nvme storage like consumer grade Sabrent pocket SSDs. Would like to see a unit that can accommodate like all M.2 2280 and have the footprint that represents these 1" x 3" SSDs;

I am very happy to use TrueNAS now. Compared to QTS by QNAP, it is light years better. I never want to go back.

ZFS is just great, nice that an open source distro of linux makes it accessible now. Docker is there too.

Docker has been crippled to k8s and no access to docker-compose easily.

Will continue to use until compelled to use something else for all the reasons I stated above.

Free, ZFS, dashboards and connectivity to other tools like Grafana.

I have multiple drives and continue to use an old chassis. You can build I out as expensive or budget.

Truly enjoyed making my own NAS server to host my media collections and store important data; ease of mind.

Easy to install, lots of guides online to follow thru setups or use to troubleshoot. Step by step installations are also available on YouTube.

None so far, been using for 2yrs + and have not had any issues.

Try it. You will not regret it. I started over 15 years ago and it has evolved to a great product line.

Web interface. Easy to use and secure. Mostly the fact that is somewhat agnostic to hardware. Requirements are not crazy bad and it just works.

Interface can be slow at times and a bit crowded and I wish they had a way to support some hardware other than inter nics.

Prior versions were not straightforward to update (FreeNAS).

My experience with TrueNAS has been outstanding, I only operate my NAS machines with this software now, as it is incredibly easy to manage multiple systems with this software.

The Ease of use is phenomenal.
The ZFS file system is really starting to become superior to other file systems, the speed at which you can operate your drive is outstanding.
Easy Deployment.
User management is incredibly easy when compared to competing NAS Software solutions.
TrueCommand (Another Application they have) allows for easy management of multiple systems.

ZFS - ZFS is awesome, but due to them having to use ZFS, if you want to expand your storage after you've been using one for a while, you have to create a whole new dataset, you can't expand your dataset YET. The devs of ZFS claim it is coming, we just don't know when.

I love this system. All my computers and devices automatically backup. The system just works, what more can I say?

System is powerful with ZFS. Fully scalable as your system grows. System has been running for years without a hitch whatsoever. I expand my system usually once a year when I add/upgrade a Hard Drive when they go on sale. While I have the system open I vacuum the inside. That is the extent of my maintenance pretty much (plus vacuum the outside every 2 months). Love it!

The VMs are not as easy to setup, nor are they as powerful as other systems. But there are overhead solutions for that...

The title says it all, I didn't know much about NAS before my experience with Scale, and to be honest i've been blown away by it's ease of use. It has a ton of features which i'm probably never gonna use (at least for now), but the ones I'm using are well documented, and easy to implement. I'm still learning, but overall I feel great about sticking with TrueNAS.

The initial configuration was a walk in the park.
ZFS is awesome in so many ways!
The Ui in both Core and Scale is clean and organized.
Setting up VM and containers is foolproof.

It's too soon for me to list cons since i'm so new, the features i'm using work flawlessly.

Needed to evolve as i had a 10 years old solution. I had several possibility and it turns out that TrueNAS was arriving to a good stable state. i did test it and compare with other solution. I finally migrated to TrueNAS and was excited for scale. I migrated to scale not long ago. Overall great product that i m sure will continue to improve.

TrueNAS: very mature.

TrueNAS scale: getting closer to TrueNAS maturity with a lot more to offer.

Ready for Hybrid and multi-cloud

Would no recommend it outside of IT world for people who do not want to pay the price to learn to manage TrueNAS.

Great, it was a really pleasant experience and very informative, also really great to know how to start a server.

The installation process on the right hardware is smooth, in older PC it might be a little more difficult but overall great, the service is nice.

It's closeness, it's difficult to install certain things.

I'm using TrueNAS for 1 year now and it's nice to have a clean and nice way to store my own data. I really like it.

Great solution for self hosted storage.
Set up is easy, even using proxmox.
Easy way to set up as "time machine" volume.

The web ui is not a 100% intuitive.
Setting up data sets is not a 100% clear to me.

I'll say as a relative newbie to setting up a NAS I was a bit overwhelmed at first with all the options, but a bit of education allowed me to slim things down and make it manageable. Once I got the basics of the NAS working with my Mac, I expanded it to the PCs and Linux boxes... It was a fairly heavy learning experience but well worth the effort.

After reviewing a few youtube videos I was able to spin up my new NAS with TrueNAS very easily. In the house I have Macs, PCs and a Linux server and I got them all to access the TrueNAS install quite easily. I was able to connect it to Backblaze B2 storage so all of my household computer back up via the NAS now... that gives us both local backup plus off-site.

I'd say the trickiest thing for me was choosing between the two TrueNAS versions. I initially went with 'Scale' but after a while determined that for my use case the older TrueNAS Core was a better fit. So I had to re-install everything, but that was a fairly minor hiccup.
