What is Mobian?

Mobian aims to merge the classic Debian distribution with the Phone Shell (phosh) project, ensuring compatibility across a variety of mobile devices, including the Pinephone. Its primary objective is to minimize the distinctive features of Mobian by contributing enhancements back to the original projects, a practice referred to as "upstreaming." Incorporating Phosh, which is developed by Purism, Mobian utilizes widely-used modern Gnome technologies such as GTK, GSettings, and DBus, all operating on a wlroots-based Wayland compositor known as phoc. The operating system is tailored not just for smartphones like the Pinephone, but also for tablets like the Pinetab and the Librem 5, broadening its usability across different device types. In this effort, Mobian seeks to maintain a delicate balance between necessary custom patches and packages that boost performance while aiming to lessen reliance on modifications unique to Mobian. This dual approach not only improves the overall user experience but also fosters the preservation of the upstream projects' integrity. Ultimately, Mobian's commitment to collaboration and compatibility signifies a step towards a more unified mobile operating system landscape.

What is Manjaro?

Manjaro is a free and open-source Linux distribution based on Arch Linux that provides a customizable operating system for personal computers, software development, and business environments. The distribution combines Arch Linux's flexibility and software ecosystem with a streamlined installation experience and preconfigured desktop interfaces. Official desktop editions include KDE Plasma, GNOME, and Xfce, while community editions provide additional choices for users with different interface preferences. Manjaro follows a rolling release model that continuously delivers operating system improvements, application updates, and security patches without requiring traditional major version upgrades. Its package repositories are organized into Stable, Testing, and Unstable branches to provide different levels of software freshness and testing. The operating system includes Pacman for command-line package management and provides the Pamac graphical software manager in many editions. Pamac enables users to search for applications, install and remove packages, and manage system updates through a desktop interface. Optional support for the Arch User Repository, Flatpak, and Snap expands the software available beyond Manjaro's official repositories. Manjaro Hardware Detection automatically identifies compatible devices and assists with installing appropriate graphics drivers, including supported open-source and proprietary options. The Manjaro Settings Manager provides graphical tools for switching Linux kernels, configuring hardware drivers, managing language settings, and adjusting system preferences. Manjaro supports programming environments, office productivity, multimedia applications, gaming through compatible Linux software and Steam, and other computing workloads while allowing users to customize their desktop environments and system configurations.
