What is OpenSCORM?

For teams that deliver compliance, onboarding or certification training, OpenSCORM is SCORM hosting without the per-registration bill. Upload SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004 or xAPI courses, send learners a link or dispatch a course into a client's LMS, and see who completed what. Pricing is a flat monthly rate per plan, set by how many learners actually train each billing period, from $30 to $850. A busy month costs the same as a quiet one, with no overage fees. Start on the free tier (1 course, up to 10 users including you, no expiry, no card) and move up when you outgrow it. SAML single sign-on is included from the Small plan. The web client is open source under the GNU AGPL v3 and published on GitHub; the hosted platform itself is not distributed. Hosted on Microsoft Azure in the United States.

What is Open edX?

Open edX provides a production-proven, open-source learning platform trusted by 140 million learners worldwide. Created by Harvard and MIT and governed by the nonprofit Axim Collaborative, it serves universities, enterprises, government agencies, and international organizations across 196 countries. The platform handles everything from small training programs to massive open online courses with no licensing fees. Organizations retain full ownership of learner data and configurations, making it well suited for those with strict data governance or GDPR requirements. It includes a built-in authoring tool (Studio), extensible content architecture (XBlocks), native mobile apps, real-time analytics, eCommerce, and enterprise integrations through LTI 1.3, SCORM, xAPI, SSO via SAML/OAuth, and REST APIs. The project delivers two major named releases annually. The latest is Verawood (June 2026), the 22nd community release. A network of verified service providers across Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas, and more offers hosting, implementation, and support through the Open edX Marketplace.
