What is Emacs?

At its core, the platform features an interpreter specifically designed for Emacs Lisp, a specialized variant of the Lisp programming language tailored for text editing applications. It provides context-sensitive editing modes that incorporate syntax highlighting for numerous file types. There is an extensive built-in documentation system, which includes a tutorial designed to assist newcomers effectively. Users enjoy robust Unicode support that caters to almost every human script, enhancing global usability. The system is highly flexible, allowing for alterations through Emacs Lisp code or a graphical interface, making it accessible to various skill levels. In addition to fundamental text editing, it encompasses a wide range of functionalities, including tools for project planning, email and news reading, debugging, calendaring, and even an IRC client, among many others. A dedicated packaging system allows users to effortlessly download and install a multitude of extensions, thereby expanding the platform's capabilities. Furthermore, it supports arbitrary-size integers natively and employs HarfBuzz for efficient text shaping. There are also built-in features for JSON parsing, enhanced Cairo drawing support, and the incorporation of portable dumping instead of the traditional unexec method. The system conforms to XDG standards for initialization files and includes an additional early-init file for further customization options. Moreover, it incorporates native tab bar and tab-line functionalities, as well as the ability to manipulate images—such as resizing and rotating—without the dependency on ImageMagick, showcasing its versatility for a wide array of tasks. Overall, the platform emerges as a formidable tool that meets diverse user requirements, transcending basic text manipulation and offering a comprehensive environment for various computing needs. It is this adaptability that truly sets it apart in the realm of text editors.

What is Caxton?

Caxton is a native macOS workbench for text and data files of any size: logs, CSVs, TSVs, JSON, SQL dumps, and the exports that break spreadsheets and ordinary editors. One app instead of a text editor, a spreadsheet, and a log viewer: open the file and work. Every delimited file opens as text and as a typed grid; edits made in either view show in the other, and saving writes the same file back. Nothing is imported, converted, or uploaded. Built for the data work companies actually do. Data engineers clean multi-gigabyte exports before they reach the warehouse. Analysts open CSVs past Excel's row limit as a grid with typed sorting, filter by value, fill series, remove duplicates, split and combine columns, and cell editing in place, then save back to plain CSV. SREs inspect production logs with a log viewer mode that jumps to a time and filters by severity. DBAs read SQL dumps before importing them anywhere. Every file stays on the machine it is on. Measured, not claimed. On an M1 Max a 50 GB log (403 million lines) opens immediately with memory under 160 MB throughout, a search returns 8,059,509 matches counted exactly, and Replace All across 1,574,039 sites is one undo step. A 10 million row CSV (5.1 GB) opens as a grid in 4.4 s. The methodology, including a run on a base 8 GB MacBook Air, is published at caxton.app/docs/benchmarks so an IT team can reproduce it. Fit for regulated and sensitive data: native AppKit and Swift, no Electron, no upload, no cloud processing, no telemetry. The only network calls are the update check and license activation, both disclosed in the privacy policy. Notarized by Apple, Apple Silicon and Intel, macOS 13 or later, installable fleet-wide with Homebrew. Licensing for teams: each license covers three Macs. Monthly, annual, and lifetime plans; volume pricing per seat with invoice and PO terms. 7-day trial, no card. After it, opening, searching, and filtering stay free; a license adds editing and saving.
